Learning how to move a fish tank protects both the glass and the fish. Tanks must be drained and empty to move, and fish need their own short-term transport plan.
Step: Stop feeding the fish a day or two before the move
Step: Move fish into bagged or covered containers of tank water
Step: Save as much tank water as you can in clean buckets

Step: Drain the tank completely; never move a tank with water in it
Step: Wrap the empty tank in blankets and keep it level

When: Tear down the tank the morning of the move, last out and first set up.
Watch out: Do not move an aquarium with water or gravel inside; the weight and shifting can crack the seams or shatter the glass.
