Learning how to pack a bike keeps the frame, gears, and wheels safe. A little disassembly and padding stop scratches, bent derailleurs, and tangled handlebars.
Step: Clean the bike and shift to the smallest gear
Step: Loosen and turn the handlebars parallel to the frame
Step: Remove the pedals and front wheel if needed
Step: Pad the frame tubes and chainstays with foam or wrap
Step: Protect the derailleur with extra padding
Step: Use a bike box or a sturdy carton for the frame
Step: Bag the pedals and small parts and tape them inside
Step: Reassemble and check brakes and gears on arrival
Protecting a bicycle in transit.
When: Pack the bike the day before or morning of the move.
Watch out: Do not lay an unprotected bike loose in the truck; the rear derailleur bends easily and is costly to repair.
