A voter registration address change keeps your ballot valid after you move. Updating it is usually free and quick, but deadlines fall weeks before each election, so do it early.
Step: Visit vote.gov to find your state election office
Step: Update your registration online if your state allows it
Step: Use the same name and address as your driver license
Step: Check your state registration deadline before the next election
Step: Confirm your new polling place or request a mail ballot
Step: Update your party affiliation if it changed
Step: Keep the confirmation for your records
Step: Re-register again if you move across county or state lines
Updating where you are registered to vote.
When: Update within a few weeks of moving and before any election deadline.
Watch out: Do not assume a DMV address change updates your voter registration; in many states they are separate.
