When to start packing for a move is sooner than most people think. Beginning with rarely used items weeks ahead keeps the final days calm instead of frantic.
Step: Start with storage, attic, and rarely used rooms first
Step: Pack out-of-season clothes and decor early
Step: Work room by room from least to most used
Step: Keep daily essentials accessible until the end
Step: Label every box with its room and contents
Step: Set aside a separate moving-day essentials box
Step: Finish all but the essentials a day or two before
Step: Leave only the open-first box for move day
Timing the start of packing.
When: Start packing 2 to 4 weeks before the move for an average home.
Watch out: Do not leave it all for the final weekend; rushed packing leads to breakage, lost items, and unlabeled boxes.
