When to transfer utilities when moving is a balance: keep service on at the old place until you leave and have it ready at the new one before you arrive. Scheduling early avoids gaps.
Step: List every utility: power, gas, water, internet, and trash
Step: Contact each provider 2 to 3 weeks before the move
Step: Schedule shutoff at the old home for after you leave
Step: Schedule activation at the new home for before you arrive
Step: Ask about transfer fees, deposits, and installation windows
Step: Take final meter readings or photos at the old place
Step: Confirm service is live at the new home on move-in day
Step: Update billing addresses for any final invoices
Timing utility transfers.
When: Schedule utility transfers 2 to 3 weeks before move day.
Watch out: Do not schedule same-day shutoff and startup; book activation a day early so you are not without power or internet on move-in.
