How to Move a Jon Boat

A jon boat is a flat-bottom aluminum boat that is light enough to move several ways: on a boat trailer, in or on top of a truck, or even on heavy roof bars for a small one. This guide covers each method, how to tie it down so it cannot slide or lift, and the overhang flag rule when it sticks out past the truck.

Pro tip: A bed extender lets a small jon boat ride safely in a pickup with the tailgate down and the boat flagged.

Watch out: Do not haul a jon boat right side up on the highway. Upside down sheds wind, while right side up can catch air and lift.
