How to Move a Kayak

A kayak rides best on a roof rack, and the whole job is getting it up top and tying it down so wind cannot lift it. This guide covers loading a kayak solo or with help, using cradles or foam blocks, and the bow and stern lines that keep it from flying off at highway speed.

Pro tip: A rear roller or a folded towel on the back bar lets one person load a kayak without help.

Watch out: Never skip bow and stern lines on the highway. Wind can lift a kayak and rip the crossbar straps or the rack right off.
